Tangible Surface V1

We are very happy that Actuating Geometry in Design Workshop has finished successfully!! In order to demonstrate the concept and signal transformation from physical simulation in Grasshopper to geometry calculation in Processing to physical actuation via Arduino, TsungHsien, Shih Yuan and I had a pre-workshop a week before the actual workshop and built the Tangible Surface example!

Dynamic tangible surface is not a brand new concept and many projects have already been built, such as Hyposurface of Decoi, Recompose of Hiroshi Ishii and my Tangible Pixels. These projects all use single axis mechanism to create free surface movements. However, if you observe these projects from top view in detail, their surface grid is actually fixed and surface area is unchanged. In other words, these so called dynamic surfaces are fake and limited. So, Tangible Surface try to break the limitation to create real dynamic surface by implementing a three axises actuation mechanism. With this mechanism, the Tangible Surface could be deformed to simulate any mathematical surface with physical characteristics.

Actuating Geometry Workshop

Actuating Geometry Workshop

“Actuating Geometry in Design” workshop will be held in 2012/02/11(Sat.) and 2012/02/12(Sun.) in Taipei (might borrow classroom of TKU). This workshop is organized and will be leaded by Tsung-Hsien Wang, Shih-Yuan Wang and Sheng Kai Tang. Through this workshop, participants will realize and be familiar with updated concepts and skills of computational design tools, which are Grasshopper, Processing and Arduino, and will try to discover and establish this potential design and research field.

Meet Prof. Michael Fox

Meet Prof. Michael Fox

Due to Vincent (Prof. Yun Shang Chiou)’s arrangement, I joined a small talk in Prof. Shen Guan Shih’s course given by Prof. Michael Fox. Prof. Fox is a pioneer in the field of Interactive Architecture. He not only founded the Kinetic Design Group in MIT but also accomplished many interesting and classic projects by his Fox Lin Inc. Currently, he is a professor in Cal Poly Pomona and founds the Robotecture which is a term consolidates his thoughts of interactive architecture. I am so happy to have the opportunity to present my two projects (Florabot and Tangible Pixels (Pixelbot)) to him in person. (Note: Before Prof. Fox proposing the idea of Robotecture, Prof. Mark Gross of CMU and Prof. Ellen Do of Georgia Tech also defined a research field named Architectural Robotics which dedicated in turning spaces/buildings in to interactive robots. They published many research papers and kept offering related courses.)

經由學長Vincent(邱韻祥教授)安排,今天參與了Prof. Mark Gross of CMU與Prof.

Meet Prof. Chiaki Murata

Meet Prof. Chiaki Murata

I was so happy to be invited by Prof. Yinghsiu Huang to have a talk at Young Designer Workshop (YDW), one of the side activities of 2011 Taiwan World Design Expo, and met Prof. Chiaki Murata who is now a Professor and Director of KYOTO UNIVERSITY OF ART AND DESIGN and also the Director of METAPHYS. Prof. Murata won lots of international design awards, such as Red Dot, IF and Good Design, and also juries of them.

Final Review of 2011 Fundamental of Computational Design

Final Review of 2011 Fundamental of Computational Design

This is my first official course, Introduction of Computational Design, offered in the Graduate School of Architecture of National Chiao Tung University. This course is mainly coordinated by Prof. June-Hao Hou and cooperated with Prof. Yen-Liang Aw Wu. I was introducing the implementation of Tangible Interaction (Arduino), while Yen-Liang was focusing on the programming of Graphical Interaction (Processing). The purpose of this course is to replace the conventional design thinking of students with the computational ways.
